Learn about Mounjaro — the first and only FDA-approved dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist for type 2 diabetes management and weight loss support.
Mounjaro offers a unique approach to managing type 2 diabetes with its first-in-class dual-action mechanism.
Mounjaro is the first and only FDA-approved dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist, targeting two key hormones involved in blood sugar regulation.
Simple, convenient dosing — just one injection per week at any time of day, with or without food.
Clinically proven to significantly lower A1C levels in adults with type 2 diabetes when used alongside diet and exercise.
Many patients experience meaningful weight reduction as an additional benefit alongside improved glycemic control.
Tirzepatide activates both GIP and GLP-1 receptors — two incretin hormones that play crucial roles in blood sugar regulation and appetite control.
When blood sugar rises after eating, Mounjaro signals your pancreas to release more insulin while reducing glucagon, helping bring glucose levels back to normal.
By slowing gastric emptying and acting on brain appetite centers, Mounjaro helps you feel satisfied sooner and longer after meals, supporting weight management.
Mounjaro follows a gradual dose-escalation schedule. Your healthcare provider will determine the right dose for you.
Initial dose to help your body adjust to the medication. This is not a therapeutic dose.
First therapeutic dose level. Your provider will assess your response and tolerability.
Intermediate dose for patients who need additional blood sugar control.
Higher therapeutic dose. Continued monitoring of blood sugar levels and side effects.
Advanced dose level for patients requiring stronger glycemic control.
The highest available dose. Used when maximum therapeutic benefit is needed.
Important: Never adjust your Mounjaro dose without consulting your healthcare provider. Dose increases should occur at minimum 4-week intervals to allow your body to adjust.
Like all medications, Mounjaro may cause side effects. Most are mild and tend to improve as your body adjusts.

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience signs of a serious allergic reaction (swelling of face, lips, tongue, or throat; difficulty breathing; severe rash), severe stomach pain that won't go away, or symptoms of pancreatitis.
Mounjaro is an FDA-approved injectable prescription medicine containing tirzepatide. It works as a dual GIP and GLP-1 receptor agonist, helping to regulate blood sugar levels and support weight management in adults with type 2 diabetes.
Mounjaro activates both GIP and GLP-1 hormone receptors. This dual action helps your body release insulin when blood sugar is high, reduces the amount of sugar your liver makes, and slows down how quickly food leaves your stomach — helping you feel fuller longer.
Mounjaro is injected once weekly, on the same day each week. You can take it at any time of day, with or without meals. The injection is given under the skin (subcutaneously) in your stomach, thigh, or upper arm.
The most common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, decreased appetite, vomiting, constipation, indigestion, and stomach pain. These side effects are usually mild to moderate and tend to decrease over time as your body adjusts.
Mounjaro should not be used by people with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). It is also not recommended for people with a history of severe allergic reactions to tirzepatide or any of its ingredients.

After struggling with type 2 diabetes for years, Mounjaro has been a game-changer. My A1C dropped from 8.9% to 6.2% in just five months. I've also lost 34 lbs without feeling deprived. The first two weeks of nausea were tough, but it passed quickly. I finally feel in control of my health.

My doctor recommended Mounjaro after metformin alone wasn't cutting it. Within three months my blood sugar levels were consistently in the normal range for the first time in a decade. I've lost 42 lbs and my energy levels are through the roof. The weekly injection is painless and easy.

I was skeptical at first, but the numbers don't lie. My fasting glucose went from 180 to 105, and I've dropped two dress sizes. I did experience some stomach discomfort during the dose increases, but eating smaller meals helped. My doctor is thrilled with my progress.

I've been on various diabetes medications for 15 years. Mounjaro is the first one that's truly made a dramatic difference. My A1C is now 5.8% — technically no longer in the diabetic range. I've lost 55 lbs and my cardiologist says my heart health markers have improved significantly too.

Beyond the incredible blood sugar control, Mounjaro helped me lose 38 lbs. I'm sleeping better, my joints don't ache anymore, and I have energy to play with my grandkids. The mental health benefits of feeling healthy again are just as important as the physical ones.

Started at 10 mg after the titration period and my A1C went from 9.4% to 6.8%. Still working toward my goal but the trajectory is amazing. I did have nausea for the first month but it's completely gone now. The convenience of once-weekly dosing makes it easy to stay consistent.

Mounjaro's effectiveness is backed by rigorous clinical research published in leading medical journals worldwide.
The New England Journal of Medicine
The landmark SURMOUNT-1 trial demonstrated that tirzepatide led to substantial and sustained reductions in body weight. Participants receiving the highest dose achieved an average weight loss of 22.5% — the largest reduction seen with any anti-obesity medication to date.
The Lancet
A pivotal study comparing tirzepatide (Mounjaro) with semaglutide (Ozempic) found that tirzepatide achieved superior A1C reductions and greater weight loss across all dose levels, establishing it as a leading option for type 2 diabetes management.
American Diabetes Association
Emerging research suggests that tirzepatide's dual-action mechanism may offer cardiovascular protective effects beyond blood sugar control, including improvements in blood pressure, triglycerides, and inflammatory markers in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Nature Medicine
Two-year follow-up data from the SURPASS clinical trial program confirmed that tirzepatide maintains its efficacy in blood sugar control and weight management over extended periods, with a safety profile consistent with the GLP-1 receptor agonist class.
Mayo Clinic Proceedings
A comprehensive analysis found that patients on tirzepatide experienced significant improvements across all five components of metabolic syndrome, suggesting benefits that extend well beyond glycemic control alone.
FDA Drug Safety Communication
The FDA's updated safety review reaffirmed the favorable benefit-risk profile of tirzepatide, noting that the most common adverse events are gastrointestinal in nature and typically mild to moderate, decreasing in frequency over time.
